Reasons for Hyper Pigmentation!
By definition: Hyper pigmentation is the darkening of an area of skin or nails which is caused by increased melanin secretion. Hyper pigmentation is very common of late. The following content explains the five main causes for hyper pigmentation.
Over exposure to sun:
Generally over exposure to sunlight is one of the main causes for hyper pigmentation. Melanin is a pigment produced when the skin is exposed to sunlight. Over exposure also leads to burning effect on the skin. The UV rays enter the skin and causes hyper pigmentation. Also these rays lead many skin diseases and tans the body. The dark area that is caused due to tanning looks like patches.

Wrong medication:

Eucerin, antibiotics, creams, drugs and few medicines are commonly used to treat hyper pigmentation. But these medications may not always show positive reaction leading to some side effects. Heavy dose of any drug which is used in a treatment can also lead to hyper pigmentation. So it is better to use medicines which are prescribed by doctors.

Hair removal:

Sometimes when there is improper removal of hair it leads to pigmentation. There are cases where it is seen that the area from where hair is removed makes the skin dark. Generally this happens when hair is removed through waxing or threading and when the skin is exposed to some kind of chemicals. So it is advised to test the skin before using any kind of chemicals to avoid these effects.


Hyper pigmentation can also be hereditary. If anyone from your family is suffering from hyper pigmentation then it is not a surprise if you are affected too. Even small exposure to sunlight can lead to hyper pigmentation. One must take precautions to be extra careful to delay this process.

Irregular usage of sunscreen:

Sunscreens act as a shield for the skin. It protects the skin from various damages. One of the important reasons for hyper pigmentation is avoiding sunscreen. Sunscreen provides vitamin D to skin which is essential to prevent UV rays from entering the skin and prevents skin cancer, early ageing etc. So one of the important causes is avoiding sunscreen, especially during summer days.
