What is Androgenic Alopecia?
Androgenic Alopecia or Androgenetic Alopecia is the most common type of progressive hair loss that can affect both men and women. 50% men over the age of 50 and 50% women over the age of 65 are affected from this form of alopecia. On the other hand, studies have unveiled that 70% of men and 40% of women may get affected by it in any time of their lifetimes.
Reasons of Androgenic Alopecia:
Androgenic Alopecia is the outcome of both genetic and hormonal factors. The abnormalities or imbalances in the androgenic hormones are the main reasons behind this. DHT or Dihydrotestosterone is the main hormone that causes harm to the hair follicles. Hair losing from the crown area may lead to complete baldness.
- Female Pattern Baldness: In case of female, the shedding of hair begins over the top of their scalps. In women, it appears in a diffuse form though it rarely leads to total baldness.
Medical history of the patient, pattern of hair loss along with family history is diagnosed properly for identifying the problem. Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA)-sulfate and testosterone analysis, thyroid and iron test need to be done to analyze Androgenic Alopecia.
